Is it too late to start drawing?
rainerbird asked:
Hi Pasquale.
I’ve been doing web design / graphic design for years. An area I’d like to improve on is drawing. I like your style of cartoons.
My question is, is it too late to start drawing? I’m 22 and couldn’t draw cool animals and characters like you to save myself.
I’d like to get into cartoons and just simple stuff. (not saying your stuff is simple, i’m talking about simple yet effective!).
So if it is possible to start drawing now - where do I start? Any good books, online websites where I can learn the basics?
Oh, and I guess I better ask you to draw something - so how about a giraffe wearing a fedora whilst on the run from policeman?
PeaceHi William!
Thanks for the nice words.
I am certainly no expert or close to any sort of authority, but I am glad to share the knowledge and resources I have collected.
The hardest part is coming up with ideas. If you don’t have them, you’ll have no motivation to draw, and without motivation to draw, you can’t practice. Nothing trumps practice.
At a really young age, it’s hard to formally pinpoint and train our observational skills. Creativity is something that seems most abundant and un-shy at a younger age. It is often a struggle to harness and maintain wild creativity when we have to tone it down to be proper adults in the ‘real world’. This is probably the reason why most Animators are such loopy characters; it’s encouraged.
On the flipside, it’s only after we have the time to sit down and analyse, that we are able to really criticise technical ability. If anything, an advantage of starting later is that you can easily catch and weed out bad habits. I think our best breakthroughs happen during a more mature mindset. It’s only when we get a chance to dissect, that we are able to improve and progress.
So no, it’s never too late to start drawing.
Life drawing is perhaps the most useful tool I’ve ever utilised. It helps you to realise where your observational weaknesses are, and learn to correct them. Developing and strengthening fundamentals will most certainly inform one’s ability as an illustrator. Don’t try and force a style, but let it come naturally. Style is something you can abstract from function.
Where do I start? - I’d recommend reading these previous entries
I hope this helps!
p.s. I’ll add your drawing request to my queue.

Vector time!
Refining the shapes, making sure to wrap lines around & across the form, rather than just tracing outlines. Solidity is still important!

I finally got Jessa’s tumblr done last night! I ended up using the theme I designed for Pasquale with a few modifications. I have no idea how much she’ll actually use it but you all should go follow her and encourage her to post.>Also, special thanks to Pasquale for collabz0ring with me and doing a sweet giraffe illustration. She loved it!

I worked with my best buddy ck to make something fun for his wife Jessa. This is probably the first time I’ve drawn a giraffe without rollerskates or buck teeth, or spots.
